December in the Slow Lane
When our program was founded, I decided to do things differently. I wanted to support homeschooling families in various ways, and one of those is by having a schedule that honors the needs of many families and provides space for family time. During the month of December, we know many are overwhelmed and hurried. A time that should be special is too often so full that we miss the opportunity to actually enjoy the season.
With that in mind, we made the decision to do December differently. We end Quest 2 with a Christmas program and a Family Day the first week of December, and then - we pause.
We invite you to purposefully slow down, mindfully decelerate, and embrace a break in the midst of a busy season. During the extra family time you have during December, I encourage you to try some new family activities -
read a book aloud,
bake something from a family recipe AND a new recipe,
do a new family Advent Bible study,
start a dream/bucket list journal for your family,
visit a local retirement home or senior center,
play a new game together,
have a Christmas movie marathon, and
use the gift I’m giving each family to spread some Christmas Kindness!
You can also let your child embark on a Project-Based Learning adventure at home! Here’s a free planning guide from a homeschooling family. It will work for all levels:

However you choose to spend your December, I hope you will embrace some time to focus on the beauty of the season. May your days be filled with joy and peace. Merry Christmas, SCS friends! I look forward to kicking off 2025 with you all in January!
